What Epicurus mainly had in mind was the question of how to  live the best possible life, especially considering that we only  have one. Epicurus held thoughts on pleasure, desires, lifestyle, and more when it came to achieving happiness. There are three states that Epicurus considered to constitute happiness, those are: Tranquility, Freedom from fear, and Absence of bodily pain.

  • Moral good is the same as pleasure, either physical or mental and moral evil is the same as pain, whether physical or mental
  • The good life for the Epicurean involves disciplining of the appetites and needs to be the absolute minimum necessary  for healthy living, detachment  from most of the goals and values that are  most highly regarded, and withdrawal from active participation in the life of the community, in the company of a few select friends- in a word, plain living and high thinking
  • Inner piece, Serenity, and well being should be maximized
  • This is similar to a Buddha like tranquility, but with the difference that the Epicurean asserted the  full reality of the physical world and does not seek to be  absorbed into a mystical nirvana.
